Introduction

The profession of nursing has been developed throughout the history. The profession has witness changes in practices and roles of the caregivers together with changes in policies. However, the nursing profession remains to provide care and services to needy people (Blanche & ADRN, 2010). In this paper, we will discuss the origins of the nursing profession and its development in past 200 years. Moreover, the paper will discuss the future prospective for this profession.

Origin of Nursing and its Development in past 200 years

As caretakers of family, children and the community, it was natural that women in the societies were the caregivers, the nurses as the society evolved. Nursing is the oldest known profession. The home was the centre of healthcare, and after the first two centuries of European exploration of Northern America, the entire nursing community was home nursing. Even, when the first hospital of Philadelphia was opened, it was considered to be poor-house or asylum. After one or two centuries, the public changed its view for hospitals as safe and reputable places for care (Masters, 2009). The civil wars provided massive drive to the development of hospitals and the development of this profession as a credentialed field.

Development of Nursing Profession

The profession has been evolved in various aspects including the uniform, Salaries, Job Demand for Nurses, the Roles of Nurses in Health Care, the Role of Men and Women in Nursing and Technology in Nursing. Previously the nurses used to wear stocking and dresses as uniforms, and now the uniforms of nurses are designed more for functions than forms, but they are considered much more comfortable as compared to the previous dresses (Blanche & ADRN, 2010).
