Analytical account of Nurse prescribing competency domain 1: Principles
Analytical account of Nurse prescribing competency domain 1: Principles
Introduction
Non-medical prescribing is growing and a large workforce. It equips an individual with the principles of prescribing. The nurse prescribing which was previously known as Extended Formulary Prescriber gives a patient quicker access to medications. Nurse supplementary and independent prescribing has the legal authority to prescribe all unlicensed and licensed medicines with some slight limits to prescribe controlled drugs. The rights of prescribing such medicines are similar to the health care doctors. The Nurse prescribing program focuses on prescribing practice development in the clinical setting and also helps develop the professional decision-making skills and critiquing (Non medical prescribing,2010,n.d.).
All midwife and nurse prescribers are only responsible to prescribe within their competency (Buchan et al, 2004, n.d.).The domains of prescribing competencies for nurses have been developed using behavioural competency approach which helps an individual to monitor how the jobs of nurses are being done and its effectiveness is also being seen. Thus a competency frame work (competencies collection) is central to the effective performance of a midwife or nurse. The nurses usually recognize their competencies and expertise required to prescribe appropriately, safely and cost effectively as both supplementary and independent non medical prescribers (Department of Health, 2005, n.d.). It thus improves working relationships between health care professionals. The professional practice of nurses relates to the legal, ethical and professional responsibilities which require functioning in accordance with legislation affecting health care and nursing, demonstration of satisfactory knowledge, Protection of group and individual rights and accountability for practice. The competencies of NMC are divided into four domains Nursing Midwifery Council, 2010, n.d.).Evidence of practice and safety as a midwife or nurse is demonstrated when they meet the competencies within the following domains (National prescribing centre, 2012).
