Article 1: Nurses and Stress: Recognizing Causes and Seeking Solutions

Practice Problem Identified by Article

The selected article identified the extreme occupational stress in nurses. There was not much research work done on the occupational stress of nurses in the past. It is one of the significant problems encountered by nurses. Nurses should not bear any mental stress in order to provide the appropriate nursing care to patients. Any mistake made by the nurse in drug administration or in providing patient care may lead the patient to life threatening events. The selected article has highlighted this critical issue of occupational stress, as well as strategies for its reduction. Article demonstrated the intensity of stress in nurses with respect to their region, working area, and job description. Moreover, it focused on the ratio of nurse to patient, economic status of the country, geopolitics, policies of health care, education and training, as well as the cultural values. Article proposed six prime stressors nurses are facing in providing care to children, adults and other population. These six stress stimulators include lack of reward for the critical nursing care provision, shift working, relationship with other health care providers, pressure of time, work load and availability of inadequate staff. Moreover, nurse needs to cope with emotional needs of the ill persons and associate families, diagnosis of poor diet, as well as dying and death. Nurses also find difficulty in receiving the adequate support fro supervisors in certain cases. Lack of management and leadership, worse locus of control with poor group cohesion to work in a team are some additional and important issues causing stress in nurses (Happell et al, 2013).

Author credentials in article

The number of investigators involved in the research study is six. All the authors are well qualified holding a degree of PhD, except one who was a research fellow and professor at the university in the Institute of Health and Social Sciences Research and School of Nursing and Midwifery. All the other authors are also at the post of professor at the same institute of Central Queensland University. Three of the authors are registered nurse. As this study relates to the issue of stress in nurses, there is no doubt for the credentials and job description of the authors in the research.

Significance of Healthcare Problem

Persons with stress cannot perform up to the mark working in any organization. The poor performance of the employees affects the overall goal of the organization. It is the responsibility of the administration of the organization to provide a healthy environment to the workers. Nurses with a healthy mind and body provide the appropriate nursing care to the patients reducing the incidence of further complications in them (Myny et al, 2012).
