Introduction

This essay is based on North East Health Care case study. NEHC is manufacturers of medical gas equipment. The company has been well-known for over fifty years starting as a small family concern with the shareholders injecting some capital, and under new administration the company has seen fast and uninterrupted growth.

This essay will analyze and evaluate the trade union presence at NEHC. The union is defined as an association of workers for the defence and promotion of their economic and social interests. The union is characterized by using specific instruments to achieve the objectives, such as collective bargaining, strikes and other forms of labour conflict, and social consensus (Thomas, 2003). Primary trade union organization unites members of trade unions regardless of ownership and subordination, trade unions act under the provisions adopted in accordance with the statute, or by a general provision on the primary trade union organization. There are various important implications of trade unions within the organization. Unions have four main roles traditionally with the individual employers, business associations, the government and the general public (McBride, 2001).

The economic role of trade and employee union at North East Health Care must be to facilitate production and equitable distribution of powers in an organization. This can be achieved largely through collective bargaining and negotiations at company, industry or national level. Union is a voluntary organization, which brings together employees who share common interests to form its activity in both the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors, to protect labour and socio-economic rights and interests of its members. Trade unions have the right to organize and strike, charges, rallies, marches and demonstrations in defence of labour and socio-economic rights and interests of workers in accordance with the law (Balser, 1997).

Role of Trade Union Presence at NEHC

There are various implications of trade and employee unions at North East Health Care. Trade union is a voluntary public association of citizens who share common industrial, professional interests, the nature of their work, created in order to represent and protect their social and labour rights and interests. All trade unions have equal rights. Implementation of safety and employee friendly policies at North East Health Care will promote social regulation of social relations in which employees engage in their work. Relations with the trade unions are governed by different types of social norms such as morals, traditions, etc. The limits of legal regulation of relations with trade unions at North East Health Care depend on the state of social relations, the degree of development, socio-economic and political environment in which they develop (Barling, 1990).

The main task of the trade union at North East Health Care should be to defend the interests of workers and represent them in dealings with employers. In practice, union should try to prevent lay-offs, monitor compliance with the Code by employers, the fight for higher wages and better working conditions for employees.
