Introduction

This assignment provides an overview of the work of The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence 'NICE'. The overall module 'Organisation of Modern Healthcare' provides an overview of the development and organisation of the NHS, in the broad context of welfare and social policy models. It also examines examples of new developments and initiatives, including 'modernisation' in public services, multidisciplinary working, and changes in professional roles / boundaries and the public / private sector relationship.

Origin and Purpose of NICE

The origin of National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) dates back to 1999. It was started in order to the variances existing between the quality and availability of National Health Services (NHS) care and treatments; called the postcode lottery. The evidence based guidance and other products of NICE help in resolving the uncertainties as to what procedures, devices, medicines and treatments offer the best value for money to NHS and which represent the best quality of care (www.nice.org.uk).

The organisation is also involved in formulating guidelines, in order to recommend the best ways for promotion of well-being, encouraging healthy living and for preventing diseases. NICE establishes these guidelines for local authorities, the NHS, and all other organisation which are concerned for improving health of people in community, private, public and other voluntary sectors.

This organisation is a special health authority and is supported by the department of health of the United Kingdom. The Health and Social Care Bill of 2011 have established various plans for the organisation, to change into a Non Departmental Public Body and for its responsibility to spread out and provide high quality standards and guidelines to the sector of social care of the United Kingdom. The organisation develops evidence-based guidelines, commonly the on the most effective and efficient paths to prevent, diagnose or treat diseases and to cure for ill health. The guidelines established by the organisation are patient friendly, which in turn is empowering and educating public, patients and care givers to participate in managing their health conditions.

NICE is formulating a library of approximately one hundred and fifty quality guidelines; the main aim behind all these efforts is to provide a vision to the NHS related to what is high quality care. These standards, are sub-divided according to the form of diseases, clinical area or conditions, and will identify when a procedure or treatment will be considered safe and highly effective, cost effective. Not only this, it will also identify when a procedure will be viewed as a positive experience by patients. Moreover, in the future, the organisation also aims to develop the quality standards required for social care, which it considers as a part of its expanding responsibilities (www.nice.org.uk).
