NFPA 13 D residential sprinkler system is greatly being an automated fire suppression system that is used widely for fire protection systems. Despite of its many benefits, many families oppose its use for the protection purposes. The rationale of this paper is to examine the reasons that lead to the opposing of residential sprinkler systems use as a fire protection system in US. The research will further assay the strategies that could be used to overcome the prevailing issues.NFPA 13 D Residential Sprinkler Systems
Introduction
Automatic fire sprinklers were first installed to protect factories and textile mills against fire incidents in the late 1800. Later residential Sprinkler systems were introduced to reduce the death casualties of both the civilians and fire fighters in the fire incidents especially in the residential areas. Residential Sprinkler systems are the automated fire suppression systems that are available in simple designs with the aim of saving valuable lives of the people against fire. These automates systems have been operating for more than 100 years both domestically and residentially. The principle of a residential sprinkler system is to make available a system that detects and controls residential fires and provide protection against injuries, deaths and assets damages.
The installation of residential sprinkler systems has increased in US for it increases the probability of survival between 70 to 90 percent. It use has also increased due to the ordinance and life safety provided by these systems.
Discussion
In order to reduce the risk of mobility in fire incidents, NFPA 13d residential sprinkler systems were developed in May 1973. Residential Sprinkler Systems are life protecting systems provides the occupants of the house enough time to escape out during the fire set in the house.
In 2008, the installation of these systems were made mandatory in the newly constructed one to two family houses and by the year 2011 it became effective (Garcia, 2012, p.1).
Design of Residential Sprinkler System
NFPA 13D systems are designed for one- and two family residences. It can be applied to homes with up to four story buildings. It can be applied to any residential constructions. The objective of these systems is to provide optimum safety of lives at an affordable price. The Residential sprinklers operates quickly, but the flow of water and its pressure are comparatively low than the other standard systems (Madrzykowski & Fleming, n.d). These systems have special water distribution pattern. These systems ...
