People spend most of their spare time attending to media through either watching or listening to broadcast from radio or television or reading text such as newspapers or magazines. Business organizations or politicians use or manipulate the media to further their agenda. Along with having the power to make people think, feel and realize through its own perceptions, media has interloped almost every possible segment of the society. Televisions are there at homes, office, and public places. Newspaper and the internet are intrusive and make their presence felt everywhere. While some audiences may take every news item to be genuine and authentic, a vast majority of the public view the media with suspicion, questioning its intentions and motivations. Media bias as such comes to be viewed with profound distaste by the people. Nevertheless, media continues to shape values and ideologies of the people in light of the opinions and ideas it renders through the various mediums.

The success and advancement of a society is gauged by many factors. One of the reasons behind a prosperous society is its ability to make its own decisions. This is not possible if it is unaware of the true facts. It needs to have the correct information that must be accompanied by an open and unbiased exchange of views. This is where the importance of media comes in hand. For the success of people and society, it is essential that media plays its role positively. There is no way how any institution could be 100 percent accurate and free of evils. The people need to build their tastes and take many considerations into account before coming to a final judgment about anything.

U.S president Abraham Lincoln pointed out to this reality.

“Let people know the facts, and the country will be safe.” (Krimsky, 2000).

This point of view maybe regarded as immature in the context of the arrival of the 20th century. However, keeping in mind how news has become a foundation stone behind every society, the importance of news cannot be denied.
