The author started the discussion by the perspective that landed New York for the first time and did not much about the market condition. Therefore, when you first come to New York as a resident, everything seems exciting in this city, sometimes exhilarating: the noise, the bustle, the energy, the chaos. One can easily swim a few days it enjoys it, can be inspired by it and then think of settling permanently.

Fascinating and overwhelming

If a person decided to settle down in New York, even if only for a few months, all of a sudden thing cannot longer work fascinating but overwhelming and threatening. Even if the person prepared well, then at least take a panic when one sits with his suitcase in the taxi from the airport to Manhattan and makes aware that one has to survive in this jungle now.

Living in New York: Not easy, but worth it

The rental market in Manhattan is indeed become much friendlier tenant since the economic crisis of 2008. However, prices in Manhattan are still extreme. A clue: in the first quarter of 2010, the New York Times reported that a studio in Manhattan, depending on location, cost $ 1300-3400, a two-room apartment 1500-4800 dollars.

Who wants to live cheap; needs to drive long

Cheap residential areas such as Harlem or the Bronx have to take long journeys in purchasing, and the feeling to live off of everything that makes New York City exciting. Especially when someone is in New York for the job purpose, this is an experience that one really wants to avoid (Iversen, pp.). On the other hand, one can spend in desirable residential locations such as Greenwich Village fast for a tiny, dark room in a rundown house a fortune.
