New Testament

New Testament is the collection of books that are considered part of the Christian Biblical Cannon. Old and New Testament form the Sacred Scripture. New Testament comprises of 27 books that are considered the foundation of Christian Faith. These books are written by different authors at different times in history. All the works that made up New Testament were written before the mid of second century. The 27 books are divided into five categories; Gospels, Acts of Apostles, Pauline Epistles, Catholic Epistles and Book of Revelation.

Gospels include Gospel of Matthew, Gospel of Mark, Gospel of Luke and Gospel of John.

Pauline Epistles include Epistle to the Romans, First Epistle to the Corinthians, Second Epistle to the Corinthians, Epistle to the Galatians, Epistle to the Ephesians, Epistle to the Philippians, Epistle to the Colossians, First Epistle to the Thessalonians, Second Epistle to the Thessalonians and Epistle to Philemon.

Catholic Epistle includes Epistle of James, First Epistle of Peter, Second Epistle of Peter, First Epistle of John, Second Epistle of John, Third Epistle of John and Epistle of Jude.

Matthew

The book is titled Gospel According to Matthew. The authorship is ascribes to Matthew the Evangelist. He was one of the Twelve Apostles. The book is written in the later half of the first century. Matthew wrote the book with both Jews and Greek speaking Gentiles in mind. In its spirit, it is closely aligned to Judeo-Christian traditions prevailing at that time. It established the position of Christ as the legal heir of Abraham. The genealogy mentioned in the book established this line of decent. This is indicated in verses 1:1-16. In Gospel of Matthew, Christ is the lord of the lords and king of the kings. Matthew's Gospel is important for its unique conception of the God. The God comes to call a people in Jesus the Messiah. The promise of God's presence is central to the whole story of Jesus the Messiah. The whole book is woven around this theme. It therefore calls for strict discipline. The faithful must live their lives in the light of the forgiveness of God. The Sermon on the Mount is of particular importance. This sermon states publicly to Jesus' disciples the blessing of God for the common man who makes up the lowest sections of the society. This is a people who have seen the promise of the kingdom. This kingdom is like a hidden treasure that is one of the central theological themes of the book. This group is surprised to find God who is merciful rather than vengeful. This life can only be achieved through the living presence of God's Messiah. Matthew includes numerous parables of Jesus that help reader in building an image of this new world.

Mark
