Architectural Distortion in Mammography
Introduction
The major health issue affecting the women is breast cancer. It is the second most cancer widespread quickly and leading cancer causing death among women . For women, one of the major health problems has been breast cancer now in both the developing and developed countries since 50 years (Banik, 2013).
Mammographic Signs of Breast Cancer
There are four mammographic signs of the breast cancer which are as follows: (Banik, 2013).
Calcification
Bilateral asymmetry
Architectural distortion
Within the human breast, an extreme dense aggregation is called the mass. It is found in the patient who suffers from the breast cancer. The production of the masses are due to the desmoplastic reactions.
Calcifications
Within the breast mammogram, the appearance of calcium is referred as calcification. The breast cancer is indicated to the patient when the soft tissues start comprising of the small units of calcium. Often, before the breast cancer has occurred the calcification can be found which is then referred as the precancerous sign.
Bilateral asymmetry
When mammography is being observed and conducted so the signs observed are known as bilateral symmetry. This refers to the size of women breasts and their estimation and how much there is difference within the two breasts. This is an early indication (Breast Cancer and Screening, 2013).
Architectural distortion
The early and important sign of breast cancer is architectural distortion. Its nature is delicate therefore sometimes it is considered as the false-negative findings on the screening mammograms. Before the detection of cancer, the screening mammograms can give signs of initial breast cancer stage where it is referred as architectural distortion (Breast Cancer and Screening, 2013).
It is very important and highly recommended that breast cancer is known in the early detection possible. This is also true that only the localized cancer can be cured and treated. In the early stages the efficient and quick detection of breast cancer can play a pivotal part related to the reduction of mortality rates. For the 97.5% population, the localized cancer can make the person survive five years time, where the cancer can spread to different organs where the survival rate of five years can be only 20.4% .
From 1980 to the early 1990s, the rate of detection and incidence of breast cancer have increased at considerable rate, mostly because the mammographic screening programs have increased. Since mid 1980s the death rate because of the breast cancer in every age group has been decreased. For the early indication and sign of breast cancer the only and most available screening tool is mammography. Mammography shows pronounced signs and prominent signs of abnormality such as calcifications and masses where the subtle signs appear like architectural distortion and bilateral asymmetry.
