NATURE VS NURTURE

Nature vs. Nurture

Nature vs. Nurture

Introduction

This is an ongoing debate over whether nature or nurture is responsible for different personality traits of a person. The nature versus nurture term was coined by Francis Galton, to examine the importance of heredity and environment influence the development of the personality of a person (Meaney, 2001). The idea that all personality traits are inherited from a person and nature is solely responsible for development of the personality of a person is called Tabula Rasa, which means that a person was born white. However, some experts believe that the nature and care that both are equally responsible for the conduct of a person and personality development (Meaney, 2004).

Discussion

Most scientists agree that our physical appearance is built into our genes and our eyes are decided mainly by nature. These scientists are then taking a step further by saying that our intelligence, personality, aggression and sexual orientation are also written in our genes. Research has shown that most personality traits are rooted in heredity. Thus, in this case, nature plays a larger role than discipline (DeFries et al., 2000).

Several researchers have argued that there are some biological traits of personality, forcing the person to become a criminal. Different biological characteristics are assumed to be responsible for criminal conduct of a person as:

Level of minerals in the spotlight

Distinctive electroencephalogram (eeg) patterns

Low levels of the enzyme monoamine oxidase (mao)

Low levels of serotonin

High levels of lead

High levels of testosterone

Premenstrual hormonal changes

Another important biological factor is the presence of "XYY" chromosomes. It has been observed that males tend to have "XY" pattern in their chromosomes, while females tend to have "XX" pattern but there are some special people who have "XYY" pattern of chromosomes. They are called "super macho" and generally thought to be involved in criminal activities.
