This article, “Head Injuries in Football”, published in New York Times on December 10, 2012, is about head injuries that are becoming a subject of concern for American footballers. The article first discusses about concussion which is not a bruise to the brain, that is generally believed, but it occurs when either head spun rapidly or accelerates. Such conditions depolarized the brain cells which results in blurred visions, nausea, memory loss or unconsciousness. The subject has become such a major concern that the cases are heard at congressional court level. It is discussed in article that by late 2012 N.F.L was facing many lawsuits from its former players on hiding sufficient information on concussion dangers. On the other hand, another battle is going on between the league and the insurers.
In the next section, the article has summarized a study about repeated mild hits which causes brain damages. This study was published by a scientific journal Brain in December 2012. In this study samples from 85 people were taken who had a history of repeated mild brain injury. 80% of them were involved in sports, 50 were footballers and 33 were played from N.F.L had signs of C.T.E. despite of the comprehensiveness of the study; it is recommended that more research is needed in this field.
The N.F.L. commissioner Roger Goodell has defended the efforts of league to reduce the hits to the head along with diagnosing the concussions immediately. He also mentioned that cultural shift is necessary in order to change the warrior nature of players which does not let them disclose their injuries. He also emphasized that the league will add new policies depending upon the research. In 2009 a congressional hearing was also carried out after the grave results came out with the help of a study about occurrence of concussions in NFL players. The article is finished up by explaining the importance of helmets for football players in order to reduce the number of head injuries occur to them.
