ABSTRACT

Narcotics Anonymous is a society of those drug and alcohol addicts that are recovering from this lethal disease. It was formed in 1953, and since then it has experienced sufficient growth. It is the largest and the oldest of its types, operating in more than hundred and forty countries with almost fourteen thousand group meetings on a weekly basis. Narcotics Anonymous is widely spread in countries such as, US and Canada, and are active all around the globe. Group is open to anyone devoted to quitting his habit regardless of his race, identity or religion, and with no charges or fee, no promise to keep and no pledges to sign. The services provided by narcotics Anonymous are only limited to addiction and does not provide any facilities other than that. The fact is that the consumption of drugs and narcotics has sufficiently increased in United States since last few years. Today, society is using narcotics in a form of alcohol, different narcotic containing medicines and even through coffee. Other drugs such as marijuana, amphetamines and heroin are used but are limited to small groups of people. This paper is addressed to the people who are unaware of the activities performed in NA meetings and what services they provide. In the first part of the paper describes what narcotics are and what effects it has on human beings and society as a whole. The second part of the paper describes what Narcotics Anonymous actually is. It also includes few quotation and viewpoints of those people that are already part of this society. The third part includes those 12 steps and traditions that are mandatory to be understood in order to become part of NA. Finally, the paper includes growth statistics that NA has experienced from the day of its foundation.

Literature Review Consumption of drugs and narcotics has sufficiently increased in United States since last few years. Today, the most commonly used narcotics are alcohol, different narcotic containing medicines and even coffee. Other drugs such as marijuana, amphetamines and heroin are used but are limited to small groups of people. Why people use drugs? What effect it gives and why is it so difficult to avoid? Some are addicted to the anti-depressant effects which they feel after its consumption while others use it to increase their effectiveness. Yes, some of the drugs attack directly over the human nervous system that increases the efficiency of the brain which increases the pace of sending and receiving messages to the nervous system (Ninemsn, 2004). However, the users are unaware of it long-term effects which can nothing but lead to deaths. Narcotics: A Threat To The Society Drugs have multiple effects, not only on a person's physical body but also have additional environmental and social drawbacks. Drugs affect a person in multiple ways, however, few of them explained below:
