Introduction

I am an immigrant in the US. Looking back at the time when I first came here seems so nostalgic. I love America for it is a country that has welcomed me and taken me at the time when I needed a place called home the most. I remember just as our plane was about to land, the plane steward announced, “In 15 minutes we are landing on Chicago airport” I felt a knot in my stomach at the uncertainty of what was to happen or what I was to expect from this new country and new culture. However, I was excited to see Chicago all the same. Right after I got off from the plane, I had no idea where to go.”

She said, “Follow this baggage claim sign.” I started to follow the baggage claim sign and before I could reach the baggage claim, I saw a strange American man, holding my last name and standing to receive us. I went towards him, he knew us because we are holding refugee IOM bag. We shared the customary greetings. “Hi, how are you? Welcome to America”, he said.

We drove for 45 minutes to reach our destination in Wheaton. The man who had escorted us from the airport took us to a new apartment and helped us in setting our beds and other things. By the time I went to sleep it was 12:30 am. I was extremely tired of the long journey and fell asleep as soon as I lied down.
