Most of the musical change can be witnessed in the Baroque period. It was in this period only, that much of the technical advancement was made and new and different styles of playing were created. It was also in the Baroque period that the technique of modulation was introduced through the creation of pitches and set scales which are still today, the basic standards for music. It was during the Baroque period that much of the contrast was incorporated in the music, in the dynamics, in the moods and between harmony and melody. This technique is still used today so that music can be given more life and be made more interesting. The renaissance period was from 1450 to1600. During this period, vocal music was considered as more important than the instrumental music. It was during this period that the humanistic interest in language developed a close link between music and words. The composers at that time started to write music in order to place emotions and deep meanings in the words of their songs. Renaissance music is considered to be very emotional, although to us, it seems as much calmer. The reason for this is that the emotion in this music has been expressed in a very balanced manner where there are no extreme contrasts of tone colour, dynamics and rhythm. The texture of the renaissance music is very polyphonic, meaning that a number of lines of music are played at one time.
