The Effects of Metabolite Accumulation on Muscle Fatigue

Introduction

Sports and regular exercises play an important part in keeping individuals healthy and fresh at all times. However, there are some symptoms or conditions that are most commonly faced by not just the athletes and sportsmen but many if other such individuals who exercise regularly. One of the most commonly faced symptoms includes Muscle Fatigue. It can be said that the muscle fatigue limits the body movement or serve as an obstacle in fluent easy body movements. Therefore, muscle fatigue cannot be neglected or ignored as a casual disease or physical condition. There is no one particular reason behind the occurrence of muscle fatigue. It could be the result of the multifocal phenomenon caused by peripheral and central components. However, the most commonly observed cause of the disease is accumulation of metabolites. The aim of this paper is to define Metabolite, discuss their accumulation in the muscles and analyze how the accumulation contributes towards muscle fatigue.

Discussion

The muscle fatigue can simply be defined as the inability of an individual to maintain the force output or intensity of any given exercise or athletic activity. Therefore, uneasiness and inconvenience in body movement is a clear indication of muscle fatigue. Accumulation of Metabolite can simply be considered as the most prime reason behind the occurrence of the condition. The term “Metabolite” can be defined as the products and intermediates of the metabolism processes and procedures. However, it must be noted that the term is typically limited to the small molecules.

On several occasions, the commonly referred term for representing the reduction in the contractile force is 'metabolic fatigue'. It must be noted that this reduction is the result of indirect or direct effects of two occasions. These include reduction of any substance or accumulation of the metabolites in the muscle fiber. Energy lack to the fuel contraction or the interference with the capability of Ca2+ of stimulating myosin and actin to contract are the two basic reasons why the metabolites can accumulate in the fiber.

Metabolites are regarded as the substances or even waste products which are produced because of the muscular contraction. The Metabolites that are abundant in the human body and have the ability to affect the muscles include magnesium (Mg2+), ADP, inorganic phosphate and reactive oxygen species. Accumulation of these metabolites have the ability to indirectly or directly produce the metabolic fatigue within the muscle fibers through the interference with the discharge of calcium from sarcoplasmic reticulum or decrease in the sensitivity of the contractile molecules myosin and actin to calcium .

The development of the muscle fatigue is usually quantified as the decrease in the power capacity or maximal force of the muscles. This refers that the submaximal contractions can simply be sustained after the muscle fatigue onset.
