Multi-cultural career Counseling

Introduction

The choice of right career is equivalent to choosing the way an individual aspires to spend the rest of his life. The context of career counseling is very essential, in terms of, pursuing the goals and reaching the aspirations for an individual. In a scenario of a multi-cultural paradigm, the issue is far more complex; since the communities other than the American native community are different, in terms of, their interests. Career counseling should comprise of answers to all questions of the individual (Pedersen, 2008).

The paper explains the career counseling issues with a Hispanic-American. It is an application of the value-based multi cultural career model to the situation.

Application of the model

The case discussed in the paper pertains to the career choice of a Hispanic American choosing the career in American world of corporate culture. The application of the model is discussed as under;

Step l. Establish rapport and culturally appropriate relationships

The foremost of the steps of career counseling is the establishment of the rapport. The approach is considered when the individual is guided about the existing jobs within his field of interest, as well as, the idea of a sustainable career in relevant fields. The step comprises of building sound relationship between a councilor and the African American individual.

Step II. Identify career issues

Another foremost step is to identify the issues faced by the individual in choosing a career. This calls out for an in-depth analysis, as well as, development of appropriate approaches for the solution of the problem.
