Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of abnormal psychology in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on a movie review and its relation with various aspects of psychology. The research also analyzes many aspects of abnormal psychology and tries to gauge its effect on the development of human beings. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for such sort of behavior and tries to describe the overall effect of abnormal psychology on child behavior (Abraira, 2008).



Abnormal Psychology in Movie Orphan

Introduction

Life is beautiful! It is the privilege and right of every individual to lead a healthy, peaceful life. But few incidence disrupts and destroys all cherishes and happiness of the life. In our lives we face different sorts of people. There are some people who lose their mental control and suffer from mental illness. The aim and objective of this paper is to talk about abnormal psychology with the help of a character description. This character description is taken from a movie called “Orphan”. The following part of the paper discusses abnormal psychology from variegated perspective (Abraira, 2008).

Discussion

As suggested by the name in the movie a family adopts an orphan child from an orphanage. From the appearance this small girl was very sweet and innocent. The family was unaware of the fact that the girl is suffering from a psychological problem of chronic homicide. This problem is related to the abnormal psychology.

In the movie this problem restricted the physical development of that adopted girl. According to developmental psychologist and fellow PT blogger Dr. Jean Mercer in her recent post about this film, There are variegated aspects of abnormal psychology such as one of the important aspects is related to the mood swings and mood and affective disorders. As feelings of fear and anxiety are normal, so are fluctuations in mood on an everyday basis. Most people occupy a generally positive mood that is only brought down due to negative life events. However, some people experience prolonged periods of downs or prolonged periods of excessively positive moods, or some odd combination of the two (Hansell & Damour, 2008). The disorders that can result from mood instability or rigidity include: major depressive episode, hypomanic episode, manic episode, mixed episode, dysthymic disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, cyclothymic disorder, mood disorders due to a general medical condition, and substance-induced mood disorder. Sometimes the line between normal mood fluctuations and abnormal mood instability or rigidity is vague and hard to pin down, which brings up the case of cyclothymic disorder (Albayrak, 2007).

Cyclothymic disorder occupies the murky waters between a full blown bipolar diagnosis and normal mood fluctuations. In particular, CD entails, “…less sever, but more constant, mood swings…[where] mood alternates between hypomanic highs and dysthymic lows (Hansell & Damour, 2008, p. 177).
