Movie - Fight Club

Abstract

This research paper aims to provide a review and analysis of the famous film “Fight Club” which was released in 1999. The paper relates the behaviors of leading characters of the movie with various theories of deviance and conflicts. Moreover, it elaborates various examples from the movie which defines the acts of deviance. The movie turned out to be a controversial one because of its negative impact on the society.

Movie - Fight Club

Introduction

Fight Club is an American Hollywood movie that was released in the year 1999 by Chuck Palahniuk. The movie is based on a novel that was published in the year 1996 with the same name. The director of the film is David Fincher and the main characters of the movie are; Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Carter. Norton plays the role as the “Narrator” who is tensed and dissatisfied with his business, Pitt plays the role of “Tyler Durden” who is a soap maker, and Carter plays the role of “Marla Singer” who is in relationship with the narrator and is a dissolute woman.

While production of the movie, it was compared with the already released movies “Rebel without a Cause” of 1955 and “The Graduate” of 1967 (Fight club, 2011). The movie was aimed to serve as a sample for the conflict between the young generation and the advertising value system. The movie had glimpses of the novel and had twist ending. The movie was not supported form the executive class of studio because of the controversial acts and events. It turned out to be the most controversial movie of the year 1999. Initially, the movie did not achieve much hype and success, but after the release of DVDs, it turned out to be success.

Summary

This comic story has two central figures, the milquetoast narrator played by Edward Norton and his mate Tyler Durden played by Brad Pitt. The narrator has become depressed and dejected with his white-collar job because his business has become a failure. He starts to hate his work because he is getting no reward for his hard work and has nothing in life to live for. As a result he develops fondness for material things to make his flat a perfect one. He starts to buy the best items he can to make himself diverted. The tensed and unsettled life makes him a patient of insomnia. He becomes so desperate to interact with others that he starts to visit 12 step support groups for patients having incurable diseases.

There he feels relaxed because he has people to talk and communicate. In the support group, he finds Marla and gets in relationship with ...
