Many of us believe that success comes suddenly. As you observe others achieving their goals of life, you never pay attention to what they have done to achieve that position; what it has taken from them to give them such a dream fulfillment to them. As a result, you fail to realize what it would take for you to achieve your goals, and how can you attain the same level of success as others have got. If you truly take the time to think about the success someone has achieve, you would easily figure out that success is usually only a small step away from you. It is true, despite the fact that it eludes most people. You always feel that success is so near, but at the same time, it seems to be very far. A famous quote states, “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” I would now tell you a short story to illustrate my point.
Lesson I learnt from military school
I was given a very demanding assignment, as a part of mu military training in the air force. I was made a part of the group of 10 members and was taken to some unknown location, very far in the bush. After going through several military manoeuvres and spending some days camping there, we were told to reach back to the base ourselves. The condition was that if we would not drive back to the said location, we would have to hike. We were only allowed to take some things with us; we had a liter of water for each, and an AK47 riffle with one round of ammunition for the whole trip.
We started off at the time of sunset the same day; we had to walk through the thick bush. We had to walk in a straight line back to the base, as we were using a compass to take guidance about direction. The major problem was that even a slight deviation from the path would have resulted in loss of path for us. This meant that we had to clear all the obstacles that came in our way; we had to maintain that straight line path at any cost. The journey became worse as we had no light. You can imagine that we were actually walking blind in the moonless night.
We were not able to see where our steps were going on the land. Also, we had to walk real fast in order to meet the deadline of reaching the base, which was set 12 noon the next day. Otherwise, we would have failed the assigned task.
Throughout that night, we kept walking blindly. We got no chance for fearing or doubting. Since our futures depended on it, we had to complete it.
The Lesson
As I walked through the bush in the dark night, I kept on repeating in my mind that just take this step, the next ...
