Introduction

Today's organizations searches for the managers that are highly talented highly motivated and have the capability to sustain and produce a vision of how organizations can progress and be successful. The modern mangers must have the skills of critical thinking and creativity to the challenges of business and lead the change. It is very significant in this 21st century that the businesspeople have a specific vision, the capability to fulfil the requirements of the marketplace and to do so, what steps should be taken by the organization. However it is also important that the management of the organization is appropriate and thus people are motivated and committed towards their work within the organization. Management is the process of obtaining the aims and objectives of organization via people and other sources. The manager's job is to integrate the technical and human resources in the highest standards to obtain the goals of the company (Kurtz & Boone, 2011, pp. 23-24).

Different people have different opinions about what leadership is, there are some diversified concepts about the term of motivation. For most of the people, motivation is the process used to make people work efficiently. For some of people, motivation relates to higher salaries, benefits and enhanced working environment. However, other people believe this concept as a management activity. Today's managers still have different concept depending upon the environment of the organization (Kurtz & Boone, 2011, pp. 216).

Maslow theory

The Maslow theory is termed as the Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow described the following propositions regarding the behaviour of human beings (Runyan, 2008, pp. 23-24)):

Man is always a wanting being.

A need that is fulfilled is not a motivator for the behaviour, only the need that are not satisfied motivate.

Man's requirements are summarized in a series of levels- a hierarchy is created according to the importance of needs. When the needs at the lowest lever are fulfilled, requirements at the higher level will demand satisfaction. Maslow considers that the fundamental requirements for all human motivation to be on five levels from lowest to highest, as shown below in the figure. Within the levels shown below, there could be other specified requirements as well.

The Physiological are the needs for food, shelter and other health related requirements. The Safety and security related requirements are the physical requirements of the man regarding security of job and other related benefits, man desire to be secure in all these aspects. The social aspect are the significant motivators for the men's behaviour. Self Esteem or ego is also important part of this hierarchy, which includes confidence, status and other respect related aspects. Self-fulfilment is the highest in the hierarchy level which includes the needs for the individual regarding the importance of self grooming and development (Runyan, 2008, pp. 27) Following are the assumptions of hierarchy of Maslow's:

The needs of individuals are multiple.

The requirements are arranged in levels, building a 'hierarchy'.
