Introduction

Motherhood is the most acknowledged and powerful relationship over this earth. A mother is a woman who actually gives birth to a child and takes care of the child throughput the childhood. It is considered different to identify an accurate definition of a mother because of the difference in the social, cultural and religious roles and responsibilities of a mother (Thompson, 2004). On the other hand, a midwife is a woman who extends her services to a child bearing woman during her pregnancy, labor and birth, and during the post partum period. Midwives are also referred to as specialists in low risk pregnancy, labor and postpartum because they have practiced to handle and manage deviations from high risks to norms. The relationship between a mother and a midwife is very important during the pregnancy of a woman, and the period after the birth of a child (Anon, n.d.). The healthy relationship between a mother and a midwife plays a significant role in the healthy birth of a child. The core purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of the relationship between a mother and a midwife. A case of change will also be discussed in this paper that is very important to be changed for the betterment of both the mother and the midwife during their relationship. A brief discussion on the different factors involved in making the change and strengthening the relationship of a mother and a midwife is presented as follows.

Case for Change

The case for change in the relationship of a mother and a midwife is a very important issue that is important to be discussed. It is important to discuss the case of change to identify the change that is actually required to be evolved in the relationship of a mother and a midwife. The change that is important to be made in the mother-midwife relationship is increasing the number of midwives in the country and recognizing lay midwives as professionals will be an important change to be evolved in the mother-midwife relationship (Moore, 2009).

The change that has been required to increase the number of midwives and to recognize lay midwives as professionals because it has been observed through statistics of midwifery in Australia that proper care is not obtained by childbearing women due to less number of midwives in the region. The social requirements that are related to the change needed to be made include that the mother and the midwife should know each other beginning the important mother-midwife relationship (AHWAC Report, 2002). It is important for a woman and a midwife to know each other well to continue a healthy relationship. It has been observed that due to the shortage of professional midwives, proper care and god communication among childbearing women and midwives is not promoted.
