Abstract

The research paper primarily focuses on moral education from the perspective of school and aims to explore whether the school teachers are working over this context to build moral values among students or the subject is simply being ignored by them. The research will analyze several different aspects related to this topic considering the necessity for moral education, advantages, and funding, best practices, which in result will try to gauge its effect on school children and society. Eventually from the findings of the research, the paper will seek to know if school teachers or schools alike should overlook the issue or more attention is being paid to the moral education by making it a part of educational learning and coaching.

Introduction

The moral development of a person is mostly depended on cognition, mental operation and social interaction, more specifically on the roles and responsibilities he learns and considers significant in context to people and social institutions. The traditional teachings of schools have shown great consideration in terms of moral education. During the 19th century, moral education was associated with obedience and conformity to set of laws. The factors like rewards and punishments were enforced to maintain set standards of moral behavior, later it was transformed to ethics and manners, which were again with passage of time, became popular as citizenship, moral conduct or so-called social behavior. It was till the late 19th century that schools strongly showed non sectarian protestant tone for ethics through readings of Bible, prayers and book readings that teaches industrial ethical guide lines like hard work, private property, diligence, savings and patriotism (Stedje, 2010).

The shift in moral development from the notion of moral education to secular activities was noted during the twentieth century which was more about student responsibility, cooperation, councils, flag salutes, then school and community service to assembly rituals. The idea is that moral education was never being ignored by schools at any point of time but the values focused more on reflection American culture. A teaching of morality was set aside by teachers because of the subjective nature it possess and potentials to get trap with religious indoctrination. The majority teachings of moral have been indirect, restricted to represent middle class behavior and attitude in school classes and community, and teachings of being patriotic and heroism prevailed though the subjects of history and English. Hence, the above overview explains the transformation of moral education with respect time.
