Literacy Practices

The Global and Urban world we live in today has seen many revolutions over the years. The technological advancements have made a huge impact on how the world runs in the modern environment. These revolutions have made people change the way they think, the way they do their job, they way they spend their daily life, and also they perform different literacy practices

According to Hamilton and Barton, literacy practices not only include the activities of writing and reading but also the activities associated with that of social structures (Barton and Hamilton, 1998, p.44). Furthermore they say that, literacy practice includes the general cultural methods of how the language is drawn up in regular daily routine lives. In other words. Whatever people do with literacy comes under the umbrella of literacy practices. The author's go on describing that where ever literacy has a role to play, those events are called literacy events. Normally the texts are written down around a central idea. These events arise from and shaped by various literacy practices, they authors use the phrase “observable episodes” to refer to these events (Barton and Hamilton, 1998, p.45).

I am someone who loves to read and write, but most of the time I stick to the traditional style of literacy practices for purposes related to my studies and education, which are writing by the use of pen and reading texts from different hardcopies. I just like the feel of a pen and a book in my hand; it acts as a tool to make me satisfied. As the world is going on progressing, and the new technology is slowly taking over the old traditional style of literacy practices, at times we are not given a choice, and we have to use machines to aid our literacy practices. This is where the adaptability part comes into play. Some people do not like to read books, and prefer to sit in front of a screen rather than having a book in front of their eyes. While on the contrary, there are some people who do not like the lights of the screen and prefer the dull surface of the book over the alluring interface of a computer screen.
