What did Emile Durkheim and Georg Simmel see as the consequences of the shift from village life to modern society? Industrialization has changed the focus of all things that were primitive and of old origin. This not only influenced the focus of human beings in the name of easing the lives of human beings, but also changed the direction of societal development and expansion which not only made way for a better outcome and progress for all the great masses living in at that point in time.

Societal changes, rather transformations that occur and exist over the years not only symbolize, but also influence the occurrence and the situations prevalent in the society. In the advent of industrialization, much has been said and done, which not only changed the course of creating a strong impression on the lives of people that had led primitive, traditional lives for decades (Banerjee & Duflo, 2003).

Emile Durkheim and George Simmel were two prominent names in the business who not only highlighting the destruction prevalent to old patterns of traditional societal movement, but also witnessed and sketched the crumbling of the century-old model of societies that were established and followed, bringing down the conventional economic patterns, the social customs and the organizations of families, transcending from one generation to another.

Durkheim witnessed a rather positive impression on the developments. He witnessed and traced labor, shifting from joint tasks with prevalent commonality to an extremely complex division of labor and laborious activities. In his view, this model of urban society took over the kind of basic and common activities and drawing an entire new system, which would weigh out the true contributions of individual people altogether.

On the other hand, George Simmel was of the stance, predicting the capacity of survival of this new model, deliberating and debating upon the factors and the grounds upon which this new model of societal transformations could last the social interactions prevalent in the city, thereby maintaining its individuality. These ideas discussed by Simmel today lay the basic foundations and groundwork for the American society today (Cali, Ellis and Velde, 2008).

Expanding upon the views of George Simmel, he is affirmative on the point of greater individual freedom. This is because societal transformations and demarcations that are being established over the years, it not only influences the people living in the society but also calls for the changes and the challenges that have been excerpted over the years, leading to the designation of individual roles and responsibilities.
