MODEL OF HEALTH PROMOTION

Model of Health Promotion

Model of Health Promotion

Introduction

Health promotion as an intervention for patient care, and support is usually called patient education instead of health promotion. Sometimes patient education supports patients who recover, for instance, after surgery. Sometimes the focus is on chronic patients, such as patients with asthma or diabetes. Patient education also includes support for people who are dying, for instance in the case of terminal cancer. Patient education is not only directed at the patient but also at the patient's family, at health professionals and at other environmental factors. Health workers such as physicians and nurses are the primary providers of patient education. Frequently, many different health workers are involved in the treatment of the same patient. Patient education by each of these professionals is not always attuned to the needs of the patient. This calls for the development of patient education programmes that co-ordinate the educational activities of the different health professionals involved, for example, by developing protocols for continuity of care. (Dignan 2007, 78)

Precede-Proceed is a participatory, community-oriented model for generating victorious health promotion involvements in any community. I want to use this model as my envisage practice because it is a participatory and logical model that offers a technical formation for constructing any interference. It can also offer space for critical analysis. Last but not the least, this model permits scope to adjust the methods and content of the intervention to my specific circumstances and provisions.

Discussion

The Precede-Proceed Model of Health Promotion was given by Green. He starts with the social assessment: what is the quality of life of a certain group, community or country, and the epidemiological assessment; is health relevant for the quality of life and if it is, what are the most serious health problems? With the epidemiological assessment, the causes of health in terms of behaviour/lifestyle, genetics and environment can be analyzed. With the educational and ecological assessment analysis can be made of the determinants of the relevant behaviours, in terms of predisposing, reinforcing and enabling factors, and selection can be made of the variables that are desired to be influenced. (Horsley 1983, 93)

Use of a model for program plan development provides the advanced practice community health nurse with a conceptual focus for guiding the planning team. Although not always apparent in the written program plan, a planning model serves to keep the team on target.

The PRECEDE-PROCEED Model

This health promotion evaluation and planning model consists of two components, PRECEDE and PROCEED, which have six basic phases that can be extended to eight phases with the addition of evaluation of program impact and outcomes. “The Precede-Proceed model takes into account the multiple factors that determine health and quality of life. It helps the planner arrive at a highly focused subset of those factors as targets for intervention” . The five phases of the PRECEDE component are social assessment, environmental and Behavioural assessment, epidemiologic assessment, policy & administrative assessment, and ecological and educational ...
