Introduction

Teenage students who are attending school at Anacostia High School face serious challenges of teen pregnancy and also many related consequences that lead to emotional issues, unplanned parenthood, forced marriages, and abortions. The extent of these problems goes as far as leading to depression and suicide. It cannot be denied that the issue of teen pregnancy has long-lasting consequences. But one positive factor in this regard is that teen pregnancy is completely avoidable. According to New Heights Teen Parent Program Manual, Anacostia High School had the largest number of pregnant students in the District of Columbia Public School, having 42 students pregnant in 2012 (DCPS The New Heights Program Manual School Year, 2012 - 2013). Anacostia High School teen pregnancy is more than just a District of Columbia Public School problem, but it is a macro social problem in the United States which impacts teenagers, their families and the society as a whole. According to the Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, in 2008 teen pregnancy and childbirth accounted for nearly $11 billion per year in costs to U.S. taxpayers (2011). Finding a way to prevent teen pregnancy is needed. The expected outcome for this group intervention is to decreases cases of teen pregnancy among Anacostia High School students and also to improve their lives and ensure that they have a better and bright future.

Literature Review

A school is the only social institution which gets regular attendance from most youngsters - almost 95% of all youngsters aged 5 to 17 years are enrolled in either secondary or elementary schools (National Center for Education Statistics, 1993). Because young people spend so much time in schools, it is appropriate to ask what this major institution can do to help prevent teen pregnancies. For example, there is one school-based program for pregnant and parenting teenagers at Anacostia High School, such as “New Heights Teen Program” that helps expecting and parenting students (both male and female) in the District of Columbia Public Schools by providing them with the guidance, support and assistance they require in order to deal with the responsibilities of successfully passing out from school and taking care of a child simultaneously (Pelt, 2012). However, there is no school-based program for students who are not expecting or parenting. It is important to prevent teen pregnancy and focus on teenagers who are not expecting and parenting, and teach them more about their bodies, safe sex, and the risks of teen pregnancy which endanger both the mother and the baby. School-based teen prevention program at Anacostia High School can help to reduce teen pregnancies and help to provide a better future for teen students.
