Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California. Her family dwelled in some groups in Northern California before resolving in Santa Clara. Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants.

Many of the mothers in Amy Tan's books are having tough times balancing the persons they actually are and the face they select to show. Many of them seem that they have to conceal their distinct Chinese heritage and unattractive pasts in alignment to find acceptance.
