Mixed Research Methods

Introduction

Researchers are focused on using quantitative research as it is a pioneer research method for many decades. In 1980, researchers started to option for qualitative research and it gained widespread recognition and implementation. Later on it was observed that the combine use of these research methodologies can results in a more comprehensive analysis and can provide a better understanding for the phenomena. Mixed research methods also eliminate the limitations of qualitative and quantitative research methods and provide a comprehensive understanding of the research problem.

Discussion

Researchers strive to collect numeric and first hand data in this area of quantitative research. In this research the researcher carry out a “top=down” approach and test theories and hypotheses using the data (Creswell, 2009).The quantitative research is used during a need to identify the factors which influence the outcomes. Our objective in carrying out a quantitative research includes the search for best forecast of results. In our analysis we are usually determined to test a theory or explain the theory. It cannot translate the voices and the researchers own observations.

Qualitative research follows the collection of qualitative data. The research conducted is “bottom-up” approach. The researcher extracts themes and theory from the data collected. Qualitative research is used to understand complex problems and phenomena. We also use it in situations where we don't have much research opportunities available and would like to have a general idea of the issue. We also use this effective research method to discover hidden trends in the current phenomena and explore further areas of study. It is pretty useful in areas of research where we don't have theories available. This study is ideal for conducting research in natural settings.

Qualitative research can be affected by the researcher biased since all the interpretation is being done by researcher and his preferences and past researches can influence in the current researches.

When Mixed Method Is Appropriate

Mixed research methods remove the limitations of qualitative and quantitative research methods and utilize all the data collection tools for understanding the problem (Creswell & Clark, 2010). The research has many objectives besides seeking details, explanations and cause and effect relationships. The focus of the research not only limited to studying or testing of hypothesis but it can also be used to study the underlying construct of the phenomena. The environment of observations includes controlled environments and natural surroundings. The reality is stated as per common sense and what is observed is accepted as reality. The data collection process can involve numerous forms, observations and recordings. The research contains numerous variables, images and words. Data is analyzed by qualitative and quantitative techniques. The research findings can be generalized if they are compelling. The results are reported in eclectic and pragmatic forms.

Mixed methods approach enables the researchers to utilize the strength of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. We employ this approach when we wish to have a generalized and detailed view of the concepts and phenomenon.
