Introduction

Batesville Casket Company is located in Indiana, Batesville. Batesville is considered as the one of the world's largest manufacturers of burial caskets. Batesville Casket Company is a separate business unit of Hillenbrand industries. The aim and mission of the organization is to move ahead in the business by keeping in consideration and by using the valuable suggestions of customers rather than relying on technology. As a result of, this organization for a long time was engaged in a lot of paper work. Soon the management of the organization realized that with the help of technology they can implement the whole processes and methods of operation of different departments in a coordinated way (Pearson Education, 2009) (Brown, 2009).

Problems Faced by the Organization

The organization faced a lot of problems in a number of areas. The first problem that was in hand of the organization is that of related to the production department. The case study mentions that the managers at the customer service office used to send the order to the production unit only at night. The second problem that the company was facing is that of recognition of the order. As Batesville Casket Company manufactures a number of caskets of different designs, materials and types so, the production managers used to have a problem with the recognition of the order that which sort of casket is to be produced. The case study also mentions few of the problems related to the field of logistics. The first and foremost problem related to the field of logistics that are mentioned in the case study is of the assembly of products in trucks. This means that the caskets that are to be delivered at the first customer center office or at the funeral home then this casket should be in the last in truck. Another problem that is mentioned is related to the transportation or transference of caskets from the production unit to the customer service office. Whenever the managers at the customer service office receive an order that they are short of, they place the request for that order in the production unit. In this case, the caskets need to be transferred from the production unit to the desired customer service office on an urgent basis (Brown, 2009).

Reasons of These Problems

The organization was too much relying on paper work and was not utilizing the facilities and advantages of the latest technology. Another reason that has affected the efficiency of the organization is related to the trust and confidence of the top management. While implementing any technology, the management was reluctant to introduce it to the employees. However, with the help of commitment and dedication employees embraced and learned to use the technologies that have introduced to them. One of the most important reason that one can observe for all these stated problems is the lack of proper structure and coordination between different departments.
