(a) Determine the numbers of nurses in the sample from each type of hospital.
Answer
With the use of the Autofilter mechanism and the Subtotal function, the total number of nurses belonging to different types of hospitals was calculated. The three different types of hospitals mentioned in the data included; military hospitals, private hospitals and the teaching hospitals. The function that is generally utilized for counting the number of values belonging to a particular category is COUNT, which lies at second place in the list of all SUBTOTAL functions. This makes its function number, 2. The general form of the SUBTOTAL function is SUBTOTAL (function_num, ref1, ref2, ...). Therefore, the SUBTOTAL function that was used for these calculations, in the given working sheet was “=SUBTOTAL (2, ref 1, [ref 2], [ref 3])”. The values obtained after the application of this function are mentioned in the table given below;
Number of Nurses in Different Hospital Type
Military Hospital
17
Private Hospital
19
Teaching Hospital
14
Total
50
The given table illustrates that the total number of nurses who belonged to Military hospitals was 17 while 19 nurses belonged to Private hospitals. Also, out of all concerned nurses, only 16 of them belonged to Teaching hospitals. The comparative analysis of these observations suggests that the highest ratio comprised of nurses serving in Private hospitals (19) while the lowest of this ratio comprised of nurses who belonged to Teaching hospitals. In the end, as an approach to confirm that none of the figures of the data set had been missed during these calculations, a SUM of the observed figures was also calculated to cross check if their total equalled the total number of participants, which was 50, in case of the given data set.
(b) Calculate the average of the satisfaction levels of the nurses from each type of hospital and for each of the three aspects of satisfaction in the survey.
Answer
The “arithmetic mean” commonly known as mean or average is the middling value of all the data in a particular data set. The mean of a data set is the sum of all data entries divided by the total number of entries. The mean is the most commonly used measure of central tendency. It gives a rough idea of the size of the values in a data set without having to look at every one of them.
By using the Autofilter mechanism and the Subtotal function, the average or mean value of the satisfaction levels of the nurses belonging to different types of hospital and for each of the three aspects of satisfaction measured in the survey, was calculated. The three different types of hospitals mentioned in the data included; military hospitals, private hospitals and the teaching hospitals. The variables across which the satisfaction levels of the participating nurses were measured included their work, pay and the prospect of their promotion. The function which is utilized, in general, for computing the mean value of figures belonging to a particular category is AVERAGE, which lies on top of the list of various SUBTOTAL ...
