Introduction

The “Millennium development goals (MDGs)” are one of the most significant and beneficial goals. These goals were designed to bring betterment and ease in the lives of people. MDGs are eight goals of international development that were founded in the year 2000, by the collaboration of United Nations. The Millennium development goals are considered as the assurance by the United Nations to establish healthy global economy and peace by emphasizing on major problems including development, disease, sustainable environment, empowerment of girls and women, health of children and poverty. Reports demonstrate that, approximately twenty three international organizations and one hundred and eighty nine member states of the United Nations committed to contributing their part in achieving these goals, MDGs, by the end of 2015 (United Nations, 2009). The proceeding paper discusses the “Millennium development goals”. In addition to this, this paper also incorporates detailed information regarding the six goals of millennium development goals in relation to the democratic Republic of Congo (in central Africa).

Discussion

The U.N. is considered as one of the famous organization for its efforts to bring its members together with other, in order to achieve pre-defined goals. The United Nations aims to maintain security and peace in the entire world by protecting basic rights of people and by offering them humanitarian assistance in order to ensure economic and social development around the globe. In order to continue its performance and reputation, the member countries of United Nations, in collaboration with the UN, signed the declaration of Millennium at the Millennium Summit in the year 2000 (World Bank, 2011). This declaration incorporates 8 goals. These goals are referred as “the Millennium Development Goals (MDG)”. U.N. and its member countries aim to achieve these goals by 2015 by providing fair trade, debt relief and aid to the poor and miserable countries.

It is observed that each and every goal of MDG has particular dates and period of time in order to attain pre-determined targets of those goals. The millennium developments goals are briefly elaborated as follows:

Eradicating extreme hunger and poverty

Achieving primary education

Promoting and encouraging gender equality and empowering women

Minimizing the mortality rates in children

Improving and enhancing motherly health

Combating or fighting against malaria, HIV/AIDS and other diseases

Ensuring of an environment

Developing and partnership for and development

These goals may significantly help the United Nations and its member countries to solve various issues and problems while ensuring healthy and productive environment. It is because of the reason that, some of the results provided by European Commission shows demonstrate prominent changes in lives of billions of people (United Nations, 2013). Some of the most prominent changes as follows:

One hundred and twenty million people overcome poverty and hunger between the years 2000 to 2005. Therefore, the annual drop of poverty between these years is 2.4%.

Two million lives secured through the plan of reducing morality in children

More than thirty million people can now access clean drinking water

More than thirty million children can access their basic necessities of life including education and health facilities
