Tracking the Millennium Development Goals

Introduction

The Millennium development goals (MDGs) are eight such goals that entire member States of United Nations have agreed to try to reach by the year 2015. In the United Nations Millennium declaration which was signed in 2000 the leaders of the world promised to address poverty, disease, illiteracy, hunger, discrimination against women and environmental degradation. From this declaration the MDGs are derived and all have specific indicators and targets. The MDGs are inter dependent; health influences all the MDGs and all the MDGs influence health. For instance, better health helps children to learn and adults to earn. Similarly, gender equality is important to achieve better health, reducing poverty, environmental degradation and hunger in an effective manner.

From the time the MDGs were first adopted, they have increased awareness and formulated a vision that has guided the development activities of the United Nations. The Millennium developments goals have benefitted millions of people. They have helped a lot of people to come out of poverty. Similarly, it has saved many lives and has helped many children to attend school. Furthermore, they have increased opportunities for women, decreased maternal deaths, provided clean water and have helped many people to overcome many deadly and chronic diseases (Millennium Goals, 2012).

The report of the year 2011 depicts that many areas require severe attention including the empowerment of feminine society, promotion of sustainable development and offering protection to the most susceptible society's segments from the calamities of natural disasters, conflictions and precariousness associated with food and energy prices. The promises associated with Millennium Development Goals must be fulfilled by the year 2015 as majority of the population suffering from fear, hunger, anxiety and anger have their expectations associated with these goals. Their fear is mostly associated with their employment, families and futures. The time for planning and promises has long past and the present era is the era that requires demonstration of courage and determination by the global leaders (Millennium Goals, 2012).

The Eight MDGs are

Eradication of hunger and poverty

Promotion of primary education

Promotion of gender equality and feminine empowerment

Reduction in child mortality ratios

Improving standards of maternal health

Prevention and cure of chronic diseases

Promotion of environmental sustainability

Development of global partnerships
