The most striking factor in the history of Greek military art and technique and one of its most characteristic features is the priority accorded for the greater part of that history to heavy infantry over other formations.

In the military history of Greece, it is interesting to note that the states which enjoyed military supremacy for various lengths of time were precisely those which best mastered the use of heavy infantry: Sparta from the sixth to the fourth centuries BC, Thebes from 371 to 362, Macedon from the middle of the fourth century onwards.
