Middle Range Theories in Nursing

Introduction

A nursing theory

It is the set of ideas, definitions, associations and presumptions or hypothesis as a result, from nursing models or projects. It is an intentional, methodical view of nursing, which helps to formulate certain inter-relationships among ideas.

Middle range theory

It is the set of similar ideas that concentrate on a narrow perspective of the truth of nursing. In simple words, the middle range theory is a verified theory that focuses on certain variables and has a restricted scope, yet it is adequate enough to benefit with various clinical research questions. Nursing is a profession which deals with the daily interaction and communication of individuals. It is ever changing and constantly undergoes improvement. Without the concept of an ideology or theory, the nursing profession will be unable to shape and direct itself towards an efficient nursing practice. Three types of nursing theories have been introduced,

1. Grand,

2. Middle-Range,

3. Situation-Specific

Middle range theories are formulated to develop by both practice and research. Middle range theory imparts a direction on how to go about daily practice and research. Middle range theory is a cyclical process; initially it is formulated by an interface with practice. Then it is shaped to provide guidelines for nursing practice. In the end, research is conducted to authenticate, disprove, and/or enhance the theory. In this process, there is increased likelihood of production of another latest theory.

The Swanson Caring Theory exhibits the association ...
