1) What is your opinion on the statements made by Steve Ballmer and Eric S. Raymond quoted at the beginning of the case?
Steve Ballmer here condemns the open source software system because Linux is a collective tool that everyone can enjoy free and anyone can edit at leisure. Everyone is free to dissect the software by accessing the source code. Everyone is free to improve, modify or adapt to their needs. Linux has placed only one condition that is all changes must be made public. For many states, Linux has become a way of avoiding over-dependency from the monopoly of Bill Gates. In this quote Steve Ballmer has criticized the open acess given by Linux to the intellectual property which may harm the patent concept. On the other hand Eric Raymond is an American computer programmer and an open source software programmer. In my opinion Raymond here is criticizing Microsoft who does not believe in open source software and the freedom of intellectual property. For Raymond, the inspiration to advocate OSS comes from resistance to use Microsoft. 2) How successful has Linux been? What are the advantages and disadvantages of Open Source Software?
Linux runs with different processor architectures, whether Intel x86 or Motorola 68000, no problems, even with rare species of architecture, such as AXIS CRIS, and Renesas M32R. If commercial products are restricted, then the OS based on Linux does not have a formal set of delivery. GN U / Linux is distributed in the form of distributions, where the core is complemented by utilities and programs. The most popular free operating systems today are Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, Fedora; among the most successful domestic development ASPLinux, Runtu, Rosinka and ALT Linux. All kinds of building Linux gained worldwide popularity and a huge installed as embedded systems and supercomputers, as mobile devices, and servers. Few people remember that Android is running almost all modern Smart phones and tablets are also a distribution of Linux.
The leverage which is provided in open source software is that the rights and the source code which are reserved for the copyright holders are available for the users with an open source license which allows them to edit or improve the software source code accoprding to their own requirements. Open source software can be called as the most prominent example of open source development and is commonly evaluated with content generated by users. The models of open source software have benefitted the industry a lot. The open software initiative and the open software movement implemented the open software in the industry against the closed software and this made the users available to use the software with open rights rather than the software with no rights. For Linux, the open source software has been massively advantageous.
