Meta-Ethical Position

Meta-Ethical Position:

In philosophical terms, meta-ethics is branch of ethics that provides us with the understanding of the nature of ethical statements, judgments, attitudes and properties. The three positions of meta-ethics are subjectivism, conventionalism and realism.

Subjectivism:

Subjectivism is a particular manner of conceptualizing the subjective experiences. Subjectivity is the ideology which makes us the subject rather than an object. (Smith, 2008, 114-128)It includes the process that is denoted by the terminology mind, experiences, will, agency, thinking, intentions, feelings, understanding, psyche, remembering, learning and interpreting. According to some theorists, the subject does not belong to world, but it defines a limit of the world.

Subjectivity in meta-ethical ideology is termed as ethical subjectivity. It states that the ethical sentences about the attitudes of different people are reduced to the factual statements, or any ethical sentence that implies the behavior or attitude that is held by someone.

Subjectivism also states that the moral judgments explain our feelings about something. If a person is calling a particular thing good that means it has a positive feeling about that thing. An ideal explanation say that subjectivism explains how we would feel if we were thinking with complete rationality. (Smith, 2008, 114-128) An ethical subjectivism proposes the explanation of what it means for someone or something to be morally right.

Conventionalism:

On the other hand, conventionalism is the philosophical behavior or attitude that the fundamental principles of a particular thing are based on implicit or explicit agreements in the society, rather on external reality. Though, this behavior is commonly assumed with respect to the rules of grammar, the application of conventionalism to proposition of science, logic, mathematics and ethics is somewhat more controversial.
