ABSTRACT

In this study we try to explore the concept of mentoring in schools in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on mentoring programs and its relation with 9th and 10th grade student's transition from promary to secondary schools. The research also analyzes many aspects of mentoring programs and tries to gauge its effect on students during transition. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for the development and need for mentoring programs and tries to describe the overall effect of mentoring on 9th & 10th grade students

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1Introduction

This paper proposes a research project to workout an effective framework to mentor students in 9th and 10th grades in school. The framework would help teachers in motivating the students for higher levels of achievements, in guiding the students to choose the right career and in making them to realize their goals or aim of life through effective mentoring. This research proposal, therefore, consist of three major parts or chapters. First chapter (Introduction) describes background and rationale of the proposed research project, research objectives and research questions and at the end of the chapter, proposed list of chapters in the research report of dissertation is briefly described.

Education policymakers in Wales have recognised the importance of transition. During the research which led to the 'Narrowing the Gap' report for the National Assembly for Wales, a number of LAs said that urgent attention should be given to the issue of continuity between the primary and the secondary phases of education in order to identify good practice. It was felt that this would be an important contribution to: Ensuring academic achievement. Ensuring the continuity of pastoral care. Ensuring continuity in terms of language, policy and practice.

Transition's importance was recognised in the Education Act, 2002 (Estyn, 2004b, pp.7) and was seen as a key feature of the Welsh Assembly Government's commitment to raising standards at KS3 in ways which built on achievement in primary schools.
