Introduction

This paper discusses about the common mental illness that has over shadowed whole society. Major focus of this piece of work is on the effect of mental disorder on the sufferer's life and how he deals with his surroundings. Further, it examined the primary and secondary causes that lead to mental illness. Moreover, it explores upon the impact of mental illness on society and that how society perceives people with mental illness. In addition to this, in the end paper discusses the different treatment methods for common mental disorders.

Abnormal activities are usually always a result of a mental disorder. Mental disorder can be defined as a model of behavioural and psychological symptoms that causes significant personal distress and impairs the ability to operate in one or more important areas of daily life. Abnormal psychology in clinical psychology studies the nature of psychopathology, its causes, and treatments. The definition of what constitutes abnormal activities has changed over time and it differs across cultures. As individuals who are normal also differ in what they view as abnormal or normal behaviour. However, professionals in this field are equally required to adhere to the laid down legal and ethical regulations while dealing with their clients.

Mental illnesses are more common than it is thought. Each year about 25% of the people of the adult population suffer from some kind of mental sickness. Real mental illness is often referred to as psychosis, causing significant disruption of behaviour and overall mental performance is characterized by significant impairment of judgment. It usually occurs in the course of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and abnormal behaviour. Survivors of psychosis, describe it as chaotic, sometimes full of threats to the mental state, which does not fit in the existing order of thinking. However, this paper shall shed the light on the effect of mental disorders on the person and also on the society.

Effects of Common Mental Disorders

It is hard to give a simple, generalized definition of mental illness. First modern psychiatry mentions many of their types, differing in type of symptoms, their severity and duration of, as well as a different impact on daily functioning. Secondly, there is no clear, sharp boundaries between normal behaviour and feelings and pathological. Therefore, not every different act from the expected behaviour is a sign of mental disorder. Examples of such diseases include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, manic-depressive psychosis, depression or mental disorders due to organic brain damage.

There are other mental disorders that do not really change the operation of a normal routine, such as psychosis. In psychosis it does not cause any loss of sense of reality, but it does give a significant subjective feeling of pain and being mentally sick. These include some forms of depression, such as reactive responding to the difficulties of life or anxiety disorder, which was formerly called as neuroses.
