Mental Health Distress with Adults

Introduction

It is a fact that adulthood is the time for moving towards productive vocations and for holding the relationships in the community and at home. However, these aims and aspirations can be attainable for the adults if they are mentally stable and healthy. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge regarding the mental health in adults, along with the selected mental disorders: mood disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorder. All these disorders are highlighted and given importance as this prevalence in the adults and the increased pressure of burden of illness and distress associated with them.

In adult life they ??meet with many difficulties, serious decisions and adversities that could cause a major change in the way of feeling and behavior. An important element is the right time to distinguish these changes from the more serious problems.

Problem Statement

Over the last several decades, the prevalence of mental distress in older adults and seniors has increased. There is a gap in knowledge about the factors that determined this increase. This study addressed this gap. This study investigated some of the factors associated with mental distress in older adults. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between frequent mental distress and disability and access to healthcare in the U.K. population of adults 65 years and older. This study investigated the extent to which a disabled status and perceived barriers to health care are risk factors for mental distress in seniors.

Discussion and Analysis

Mental health is an important part of overall health and wellbeing. The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 2010, p. 821).The interdependency of mental and physical health is especially significant in senior population. Chronic physical disorders and physical disabilities tend to increase with age. As physical well-being declines with age, mental well-being becomes important in maintaining the overall well-being of the older population. Dominick (2009) suggested at least three explanations why physical and mental health may be related. First, according to the psychosomatic explanation, poor mental health is a risk factor for poor physical health. For example, chronic psychological stress can weaken the immune system and make the affected person susceptible to physical illnesses. Another connection between physical and mental health relates to the impact of long lasting physical illness on mental health. In their 2005 study, Rohrer, Pierce, and Blackburn examined the etiology if physical and mental disorder and concluded that physical and mental health have the same origin.

Despite the accomplishments in public health over the last five decades, including the control and eradication of many infectious diseases and the establishment of preventive programs for chronic conditions, the prevalence of mental illness continues to rise in the United Kingdom.
