Client Profile

Introduction

The following paper is about the mental health counseling. For this purpose, the author created a hypothetical scenario in which a patient named Katharine Jones was suffering from post partum depression. To give the readers a better understanding of the paper, the author divided the paper in three different parts. The first part of the paper is all about the client's profile and her mental condition. In the second part, literature is presented about the client health problem and in the last part, advocacy plan is given to support the intervention plan, which presented in the second part of the paper.

Client Profile

Name: Mrs. Katharine Jones

Age: 32 Years

Gender: Female

Cultural Identity: The client belong to the African American community and due to that the cultural identity, the client did not belong to a well off family. As like other African Americans, the client socio economic status is not up to the standards and she was facing difficulties in bringing up her family.

Based on the ethnicity, the client, as mentioned above is an African American and Christian by religion.

The client reached to our organization is such a way that the organization conducted a seminar on the postpartum depression in the African American community because as per the research, the African Americans facing the postpartum depression more frequently. Therefore, after that public seminar, many of the people contacted us and Katharine was one of them.

Brief Description of Client's Concern

Depression is one of the most important diseases in public health especially in African Americans, one of six adults' experiences depressions in their lifetime. It is the fourth leading cause of burden global disease (morbidity + mortality) and almost 90% of depressed patients shows moderate to severe changes in work, home, relationships or social functioning. The importance of depression is that, being a box high prevalence, causes suffering to the individual and the environment, involving high levels of disability, causes increased medical and psychological consultations, overall survival decreases and is a disease that relies in most patients.

To give a more description about the client's behavior, there are also differences in the presentation and course of depression among men and women. Thus, the reverse vegetative symptoms (hyperphagia/ weight gain, hypersomnia) are more common in women; there is greater comorbidity with anxiety and eating disorders, being less frequent comorbidity with alcoholism and abuse substances. Women face more seasonal effect on mood and greater association with stressful life events. Regarding women suicidal behavior have more frequent, suicide attempts and suicides accomplished less than men. Finally the risk of chronicity and recurrence of depression is higher in women than in men (NCBI, 2012).

Katharine's Depression Problem

As the counselor talked to Katharine, it came to know that Katharine faced psychological changes that occur in normal pregnancy. During the First Quarter: changing interests, overturning the "pregnancy" and fear of loss. In the Second Quarter: beginning of the relationship "mother-son".
