Introduction

The well being of an individual refers to the organized physical social and mental welfare. Mental health is essential for proper coordination and control. It refers to a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Schizophrenia refers to serious disorders of the brain, which distort the thinking of the person, as well as, how he or she acts, expresses ones' emotions, perceives the reality, and relates to others. People suffering from schizophrenia, particularly in the chronic phases, are likely to have problems in normal functioning of the society, in school, work, or in relationships with their colleagues, friends, and family. These individuals require extensive support services by the health care workers and the social care workers.

Mental health

The term mental health refers to the mental well being of a person, with proper cognitive responses and voluntary and involuntary actions. The world health organization defines mental health as the condition of complete well being, during which the person comprehends his self strengths and is able to tackle the routinely stressors of life, is able to perform his jobs effectively, and is also able to take a part in contributing to matters of his community (WHO, 2011).

For thousands of years, mental illnesses have been readily recognized. In historical times, all people who were considered to be 'abnormal' were treated the same, regardless if their condition was due to mental illness, mental retardation, or some form of physical deformity. In very early theories, mental disorders were thought to be a result of some evil possession of the body. At that time, the appropriate treatment was exercising these possessing demons. This was done through various ways, which ranges from harmless treatments, like exposing the sufferers to a specific type of music, to more dangerous and sometimes deadly ways, like drilling holes in the skull of the patient to release the evil spirits (Anon., n.d).

However, the factors that affected the mental well being were first categorized in classes by Emil Kraepelin. The categorization plays an important role in determining the kind and extent of care that has to be delivered to patients. With the proper mental health, the person can perform the daily activities in a more pronounced manner and improve the quality of his life.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a well-known mental health disorder. The term schizophrenia was given by Swiss psychiatrist Paul Eugen Bleuler in 1910. It comes from two Greek words 'Schizo' meaning split, and 'phren' meaning mind. Bleuler tried to describe the most prominent feature of the condition with the term; that is the dissociation of thoughts and feelings (Burton, 2012).
