SUBJECT:To regulate assault weapons, to ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited, and for other purposes.
Mr. Senator,
As a member of the legislators' staff, I consider it my national responsibility to urge you to support and cosponsor the Assault Weapons Ban Bill of 2013. I believe that the bill, which essentially calls for the regulation of all military-style assault weapons, is a move in the right direction when looking at the long-term betterment of American societies. The move will basically deem illegal all weapons that have an ammo capacity of more than 10 rounds. Such weapons are solely used by the military or law enforcement personnel and to think that untrained civilians should be allowed to carry them is as outrageous as it is absurd.
There has been a lot of heated debate on the recent Assault Weapons Ban Bill of 2013. The move is seen by many as a deliberate violation of the rights of the Americans to bear and carry arms. The US Constitution provides detailed guidelines that clearly highlight the need to bear arms. However, the assault weapons ban significantly limit these rights so that all types of military-style assault weapons with magazines storing more than 10 bullets will instantly be termed illegal. This move has been proposed mainly in light of the sudden upsurge in incidents of mass shooting across the nation.
If we look back at the number of violent incidents that have taken place over the past decade, it will become clear why allowing civilians to carry assault weapons is nothing but a direct threat to American society and an issue of a potential death warrant to the American public. There have been numerous incidents over the past decade that have involved civilian use of assault weapons. For example, just last year, on the 14th of December, a civilian named Adam Lanza brutally shot his own mother in her home with a .22 caliber rifle. He then stocked her car with military weapons and drove to a nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School where he opened indiscriminate fire on innocent children and teachers using a.223 caliber Bushmaster semiautomatic assault rifle.
The shooting spree lasted for several minutes and the law enforcement could not reach the scene in time. More than 26 people were killed in the incident of which 20 were students between the age of six and seven. Shortly after massacring 26 innocent people for no reason, Adam realized that the cops were closing in on him and therefore shot himself with a handgun. The incident made big news and received massive coverage from local and national media. Such disturbing incidents seriously shatter the faith of the American public in the policies of our nation.
It eludes me how a civilian would justify the need to bear a wide range of semiautomatic assault weapons. Personally, I do not see why a civilian would need to bear or carry an assault ...
