Re: How to get faculty involved in assessment

As you know, questions have been raised regarding the involvement of faculty in assessment of our organization. Some obstacles are observed which make the faculty not to involve in assessment. In order to get faculty involved in assessment we have to convene them and give them brief introduction about what assessment actually is.

Assessment

It is basically a way to judge the overall performance and outcome of any group of people or personals of any faculty or institution. Doing so we can know and calculate the overall performance and trouble shoot the upcoming problems and obstacles which we are encountering or will encounter in the future.

Obstacle in faculty involvement

The first most common obstacle in faculty involvement is the assessment of language. It's been a major obstacle to communicate between faculty and student. Louder voice makes echo for some students and the result is a distraction in concentrating in their congenial activities: testing, evaluating, accounting, benchmarking, measurement and so forth- language from education and business not the respective field in our campus (Hutchings, 2010). It is prominent how fast assessment can come to be viewed as part of the management culture rather than a process of faculty's interaction with students. As far as our department is a concern, we need a training sessions which will help us to communicate with the student professionally. Good practice communicates high expectations.

The second obstacle in faculty involvement is that the faculty is not well trained to do so. The main ail to graduate is to get scholarly qualities in one's field (Hutchings, 2010). The forwardly looking PhD programs are concentrating their attention on the field of education, and neither assessment has that central place in professional development experience for faculty. This dynamic has likely been intensive when the campus for good reason develops an assessment office and professional staff to manage it. Our academic department is also looking for some scholarly qualities that will lead us to the required assessment.

The third obstacle in faculty involvement is the uneasy match of institutional reward system (Hutchings, 2010). In our campus teaching is the main mission and generally some faculty gets invisible and undervalued in promotions, which result demotivation of faculty and not encourage seeing assessment as their work. So we need to encourage our faculty members by not forgetting them and their work.

The fourth and the final obstacle is that our faculty not seen a sufficient change that assessment makes a difference (Hutchings, 2010). More faculty involvement would most probably make some changes, but the fact remains that the benefits of assessment are uncertain. We must reward our faculty people so that other can see the difference and perform more efficiently to get some incentives and rewards.
