Medical marijuana use for PTSD



Abstract

This study would evaluate the facts related to medical marijuana use for PTSD. It would describe the details about PTSD and the research related to medical marijuana for the treatment of PTSD. It demonstrates that how marijuana affects the brain and whether the use of marijuana actually treats the disease or just provides symptomatic relief.

Medical marijuana provides only symptomatic relief of PTSD and does not actually treat the disease.

Introduction

Medical marijuana use is a controversial issue in medical science. Some researchers suggest that the medical marijuana is a beneficial drug and should be used for the therapeutic purposes. Some people suggest that marijuana provide only symptomatic relief of diseases like PTSD. I personally do not recommend the use of marijuana for PTSD, as it does not actually cure the condition. This study would evaluate the facts that would support my statement.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Before we discuss PTSD to understand how the disorder affects the person's brain. According to the American Psychiatric Association post-traumatic stress disorder may develop as a response to a personally experienced or witnessed extremely traumatic event. This traumatic event is sudden and unaccepted.The intense fear of threatened or imminent death causes an intense reaction in the victim, witnessing the event. The examples of stress include violent, physical, personal or sexual assault, being kidnapped or taken hostage, military combat, terrorist attack, torture, incarceration, natural or manmade disasters, motor vehicle accidents, or being diagnosed with life-threatening illness(Jakopac & Patel, 2009).

The signs and symptoms of PTSD may include depression, anxiety, dissociation or dissociation amnesia de-realization, nightmares or disturbing dreams, flashbacks, avoidance of anything associated with traumatic event, emotional numbing or absence functional responses, feeling of detachment, hyperarousal, poor concentration and irritability, and out bursts of anger.
