Edema is the accumulation of fluid in interstitial, which are areas inside the skin. Edema in clinical terms is known as swelling. This may be caused by increased emission of fluid into the interstitial or due to the impairment in the removal of this fluid. The amount of interstitial fluid is fixed by the balance of fluid homeostasis(Emedicine.medscape.com, 2013). The symptoms for edema vary. Edema can be either local or generalized.
