Introduction

There have been many countries on the planet whose immigration policy has been criticized for being rigid and extreme. One of these is undoubtedly United States of America. In fact, judging from the past decades or so, the immigration process and the immigrants from many countries are turning out to be a challenge for the country in not just dealing with the internal affairs, however, also settling conflicts with the home countries of these immigrants. In a similar context, one of the articles that I went across depicted the relationship between USA and Mexico and the effect of Mexican immigrants on the relationship.

Discussion

Published in 2013 in New York Times, the article was included with the name “Immigration Is on Agenda for Obama in Mexico”. The article highlights the very recent developments in the status of immigration policies between USA and Mexico.

Historical Framework

United States of America shares its southern border with Mexico that spans approximately 2,000 miles. Since the very beginning, there have been immigrants from various Mexican villages and small towns leaving their homeland to search for better opportunities in the strongest economies of the world that is the US. In fact, Mexico has always known to be the country from which hundreds and thousands of individuals migrate to USA every year. This subject has always been a part for all the political, social and economical debates and controversies in USA. Nevertheless, the population of immigrants, both legal and illegal, has increased in the past years (De la Garza, 1998).

Political Context

Mexico has always been a country of great interest for USA. The NAFTA trade agreement is a clear prove of US's intentions to keep healthy diplomatic relationship with Mexico. In addition, despite of the many continued debates, the Government of US did not take any rigid or offensive action against the Mexican Immigrants and continued to back Mexico through several ways. However, the Mexican Immigrant then started turning out to be the major reason for many crimes in USA including drugs smuggling, mafia wars, illegal usage and possession of property. Since, then the immigration policies are now stricter and infiltration of illegal immigrants from Mexican borders is controlled. Most importantly, the US government has reduced the aid and has started pressurizing the Mexican Government for information exchange regarding the illegal immigrants responsible for various crimes (Coleman, 2007).

Message Portrayed

The news article under discussion highlights the current status of the impact of immigration policies on US-Mexican relationship. The impression that the readers are most likely to get from this article is the criticalness of the situation between the two counties regarding the Mexican immigrants where the things already started to get a little tensed in the last five years or so. The article for its readers depict that Mexico still enjoys an important place for the US government. In addition, US still offer Mexico several benefits to Mexico in the form of trade and other mutually beneficial economical schemes, strategies ...
