The city of London comprises of London city and thirty two areas. Each area is governed by its own government which is responsible of all answers for it's region's municipal services. Corporation of London runs the city of London in which about 8000 residents are living. The Greater London Authority (GLA) has the responsibility to manage the government of all areas and to bring unity among city's district government. Mayor of London and the London assembly are the component members of GLA. The assembly is selected by the organization members and voting system is used for the selection of mayor (Addison 2006, 1).
London's management is done in two levels. On first level the city is governed under the authority of GLA, and on second level 33 local districts are governed. The responsibility of Greater London Authority is to formulate London plan defining development strategies for several sectors. These sectors includes Economic Development (London Development Agency), the fight against fire (London Fire Brigade), police (Metropolitan Police Authority), and most of Transport (Transport for London). The Mayor of London consisted in GLA has executive powers. Whereas, the assembly of London considers the proposals from mayor and decides whether to rejext or vote for budget proposals every year. Greater London Coucil (GLC) was abololished in 1986 after Greater London Authority (GLA) creation. GLA headquarters and city hall of Mayor of London are located near the Tower Bridge (Addison 2006, 1).
Powers and responsibilities of GLA and the Mayor
The Greater London Authority (GLA) is the entity that administers the 1579 km ² of major London City, covering 32 villages and the City of London. The GLA consists of an elected mayor and an assembly of 25 members, the London Assembly. The current mayor “Boris Johnson” was elected on May 1, 2008; who represents the Conservative Party. The purpose of the GLA was to create and improve coordination between the districts of the city and the role of the mayor (Brook 2008, 1).
The mayor is responsible for finance and strategic planning functions in the Greater London area. His plans are voted on by the London Assembly and implemented by the Greater London Authority. Among the areas of responsibility are the transport, the police, the fire-fighters, the emergency services, the culture and economic development.
The mayor is responsible to bring change, for the betterment of the country. His responsibilities are multidimensional since he/she has to strive to make lives easier for the people in the city. The Mayor has to make sure that the city remains clean, calm and environment-friendly. In addition, the mayor also has to address accommodation and health inequalities so that the young people can lead a productive life and contribute to the society.
