Introduction

I have taken Maya Angelou as the role model. Maya Angelou's creative achievements span numerous genres and disciplines. Her poetry and prose have earned National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize nominations. She received an Emmy nomination in 1977 for her role in the television adaptation of Alex Haley's Roots. Angelou is also one of only two poets to have recited their poetry at a presidential inauguration. An internationally acclaimed author, poet, actor, director, and educator, Angelou is one of the most vital and compelling voices in contemporary American and African-American literature.

Living in the pre-civil rights South, Marguerite became aware of the limitations that racism and sexism imposed on her. She graduated from Lafayette Training School, where she was frequently reminded that she could expect a future with no legitimate intellectual pursuits. She left the increasingly hostile racial prejudice of Stamps at her grandmother's behest, moving in 1940 to San Francisco, California, to live with her mother and new stepfather (McPherson, 2000).

Angelou's contributions to American and African-American literature and culture comprise a vast array of creative endeavors in theater, music, television, and film. She has published autobiographies, poetry, plays, screenplays, essays, short fiction, children's fiction, and, in 2002, an exclusive line of greeting cards for Hallmark. An internationally acclaimed author, social activist, and educator, Angelou has been awarded more than a dozen honorary degrees from various U.S. universities. Maya Angelou is among the most popular and visible contemporary African-American authors.

While the unflinching optimism of her autobiographical and poetic works has resonated with people of all colors and ethnicities, Angelou's articulation of the challenges facing black women in a society imbued with racism and sexism, and her celebration of the unique strengths and achievements of black women, has remained particularly poignant. In 2000 President Clinton awarded Angelou the National Medal of Art, one of numerous honors that she has attained during her prestigious career.
