Marxist and Feminist

Abstract

The paper discusses the Marxist and Feminist approach in relation with the movie based on Japanese culture, “Memoirs of a Geisha” directed by Rob Marshall and written by Robin Swicord. The movie provides sufficient details about the impacts of social and class discrimination in the society on the lives of women. “Memoirs of Geisha” is an exquisite blend of societal studies revolving around the concept of Marxism and Feminism and how they adversely impact and changes the life of women. The year depicted in the movie was just before World War II where rights of women were suppressed and they were not treated equally as men. This paper describes Marxist and Feminist concepts and then discusses their implications with the movie. Implication of Feminist and Marxist Theories in the Movie

The story is based on young girl named Chiyo who is being sold to become geisha. The story revolves around her profession as geisha and her love for chairman who helped her to become geisha. In this essay, the implications of two theories of sociology would be implemented in movie and compare and contrast the two concepts in the movie.

Feminism is the movement based on the protection of women's rights and inequality in society (Landes, 1998). It emphasized on the male dominated society where the importance of women and her gender role have always been ignored and unnoticed. It is based on the difference in treatment between men and women. Women have fought against their property, contract and voting rights. They have also raised their voices against domestic violence and sexual harassment (Butler, 1993). Similarly, Suriya was a victim of male dominated society. She lives with her family in a town located on the sea shore of Japan, Yoroido. Her family sold her and her older sister Satsu because of their financial crisis. Chiyo tried several times to escape from geisha house but could not succeed and as a result, her auntie made her a maid at the house. This is how she fought for her freedom and right but failed to achieve it.

In this scenario, Marxist ruling and working class also applied at a great deal. The authority of geisha which may termed as ruling class tried to impose its orders on Chiyo who belongs to ruling class. The class difference made her to become geisha. In the beginning, she did not succeed in becoming a geisha. At last she accepted the fact of her failure and began working as a maid

Feminist movement developments were predominantly led by white women belonging to middle class in North America and Western Europe. Latin American countries are one of those countries in which Feminist movement took a head start in comparison after white Feminist and gradually they concerns were entertained and resolved (Landes,1998, 112). They first opted to raise their voices against social issues, so they can get their basic rights including marriage, access to education, freedom to seek employment ...
